As for the Srikalahasti Durgamma Konda Temple, there is also, rather interesting and unusual custom, which involves the idol of the Goddess Durga being bound by chains. According to the natives’ legends and beliefs, such a way serves to depict the strengths of the goddess – these need to be restrained or ‘tied up’, so that they do not give free rein to the eruption. The chains are believed to represent the useful energy of the extreme God, which if unleashed could only bring chaos to its surroundings.

The worshippers consider this control of the goddess to be an important practice in which the deity is seen as actively safeguarding both the people and the land, and such a practice is viewed as sacred in the Srikalahasti communication community. The temple in itself is also regarded as one of power and worshippers rush to the temple, especially during the highlight period, for example, Dasara, in order to offer their prayers as well as to see the customary practices of the people.
