1. The Creation of the Universe

Before creation, the universe was in complete darkness and existed in a state of dissolution (Pralaya).In His infinite form, Lord Shiva decided to initiate the process of creation.Shiva gave birth to Lord Vishnu, who subsequently generated Lord Brahma.Under Shiva’s guidance, Brahma and Vishnu took on the tasks of creation and preservation, respectively.

2. The Argument Between Vishnu and Brahma:

Vishnu and Brahma once quarreled over who was the highest god. Their heated argument attracted a heavenly intervention. Suddenly, a massive column of light known as Jyotirlinga appeared, extending endlessly in all directions. To resolve their dispute, Vishnu transformed into a boar and dug downward to locate the base, while Brahma took the form of a swan and flew upward to find the top. Despite their best efforts, neither was able to reach the end of the light. This incident revealed Lord Shiva’s infinity and incomprehensibility.

3. Shiva’s Curse and Brahma’s Deceit:

Brahma lied when he claimed to have discovered the summit of the Jyotirlinga, using a Ketaki flower as proof.When Shiva emerged from the Jyotirlinga, he reprimanded Brahma for his deceit.As retribution, Shiva condemned Brahma to cease being worshipped on Earth.Furthermore, the Ketaki flower was cursed and forbidden from being venerated by Shiva.

4. The Construction of the Shiva Linga

According to Lord Shiva, the linga symbolizes his formless and infinite nature. He teaches that devoted worship of the linga leads to moksha, or liberation, and fulfills all desires. This marked the beginning of the worship of Shiva lingas.
