Cosmic Churning Begins: Srikalahasti Rahu Ketu Pooja

The story of Rahu and Ketu begins with one of the most epic events in Hindu mythology—the Samudra Manthan, or the churning of the cosmic ocean. This grand endeavor was a collaboration between the Devas (gods) and the Asuras (demons), who came together to obtain the nectar of immortality, known as Amrit.

Why the Churning?

The Devas, despite their divine powers, had lost their strength and immortality due to a curse. To regain their glory, they needed the Amrit, which lay hidden in the depths of the cosmic ocean. However, churning the ocean was no small task—it required immense strength and resources. Thus, the Devas reluctantly sought the help of the Asuras, promising them a share of the Amrit in return.

The Tools of Churning

The churning required two key elements:

  1. Mount Mandara: A massive mountain that served as the churning rod.
  2. Vasuki, the Serpent King: The giant serpent who agreed to be the churning rope.

The Devas held the tail of Vasuki, while the Asuras held the head. As they pulled back and forth, the mountain began to rotate, churning the ocean.

The Treasures of the Ocean

The churning of the ocean produced many divine treasures, including:

  • Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
  • Kaustubha, a divine jewel.
  • Apsaras, celestial nymphs.
  • Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling cow.
  • Halahala, a deadly poison that threatened to destroy the universe.

Before the Amrit could emerge, the ocean yielded both blessings and challenges, setting the stage for the dramatic events to come.

The Arrival of the Amrit

After much effort, the ocean finally yielded the Amrit, the nectar of immortality. But who would claim it? The Devas and Asuras were ready to fight for it, and this is where the story takes a dramatic turn, leading to the birth of Rahu and Ketu.
