An important and historic temple devoted to Lord Varaha, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, is the Varaha Swamy Temple at Tirumala. It is situated next to the well-known Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, next to the Pushkarini tank.
Legend has it that Lord Vishnu saved the Earth from the demon Hiranyaksha while he was a boar, Varaha. It is stated that Lord Varaha moved to Tirumala following this triumph. As a sign of respect to the god who allowed Lord Venkateswara to reside on the holy Tirumala hills, worshipers are thought to have to conduct prayers at the Varaha Swamy Temple before proceeding to the Venkateswara Temple.
Despite being smaller than the main Tirumala temple, the temple has great spiritual significance and is built in the Dravidian style. Before going for darshan, devotees frequently immerse in the Pushkarini’s sacred waters.
